Nepenthes spp. pitcher plant? Care?
I just bought a Nepenthes spp. pitcher plant and have a few questions regarding care.
1. Is it easy to take care of? (I'm a freshman in high school so i'm no expert on plants...)
2. Do you have to feed it insects? (Or can it live on sunlight and water..?)
3. How big of a pot should i get?
other information: I got it at home depot and it's in a tiny container right now.
If you got it in a hardware store, it's most likely in pure Sphagnum peat. You don't want to let the plant sit in water for any prolonged period (more than 1 day), or it'll get root rot, especially in this substrate. Instead, water the soil from above with clean, room temperature rainwater or distilled water, and allow it to drain through. You can keep it in a saucer and have about 1/2" (half inch) of water in there, but make sure to let it evaporate completely before re-watering. Nepenthes roots need a good air supply to stay healthy. There are easier and harder Nepenthes species and hybrids, but the mass-produced Neps are relatively easy. I can give a better answer if you knew the hybrid (which it most probably is), but that's not too important at this point. Temperature-wise, they like warm days and slightly cooler nights, say a maximum of 90F (~30C) during the day and a minimum of 50F (10C) at night, although this varies with each species and hybrid. Your plant is most likely something along the lines of ventricosa x alata, a very tolerant, vigorous hybrid. They appreciate high humidity, anywhere in the range of 60%-100%, but once again I wouldn't keep it in 100% humidity all the time or it will rot if it doesn't get enough light. Nepenthes can live on sunlight (note: mostly indirect with maybe a few hours of direct only) and water, but will not thrive. They don't have to be fed insects exclusively; I keep mine indoors under lights and feed them fish food pellets with great results. If kept outdoors, they'll feed themselves quite happily on ants, flies, roaches, wasps, moths, you name it. Let it settle into its new home before repotting, they dislike root disturbance. I would say that it's safe to do so once it has grown 5 new leaves, if not more. If you find that the peat is getting dry quickly, it's time to pot it on into something larger and airier, like orchid moss (Sphagnum moss). Remember that as it's a new plant in a new environment, you can expect some if not all the pitchers die, this is totally normal during the acclimatization (adaptation) stage. Some really good sources of info are www.terraforums.com, www.cpukforum.com/forum, and www.icps.proboards105.com. Good luck, there's a whole world of Nepenthes out there!
Much needed pitcher plant help?
i bought a nepenthes spp. from home depot the other day and it is still very small. there are only 2 pitcher and the biggest is only 3/4 of an inch long and the other onez is about a centimeter long. how bigg do they get and how long does it take for it to grow traps? i have it in a terrarium the size of about 14-15 inches high and about 12-15 inches long and the humidity is pretty high up to im guessing about 75 % brcuase it is a little dificult to see in it.
my secong question is i have another pitcher plant i got from kmart and im not sure what species it is but it grows upright and is tall and right now it is about 6 inches high and there are about 7 of them but i cant tell if ithas liqiud in them becuase the flaps are bent over it and i cant move them unless i rip them which i dont want to do and they are about the siz of a quarter at the mouth and at the end it is very small, like the point of a pencil and it is hard for me to tell if there is and liquid in it to digest thebugs. so how can i tell and how long will it take for them to get liqiud in them? i putt a light behind them to see inside of it like an x ray but i cant see the waters edge and it is in the same terrarium with nepenthes spp. but i can tell u it is not a nepenthes and i cant find what species it is. HELP!!!!
found it the unknown plant from kmart is what i believe a sarracenia x oreophila
the kmart plant is a s. alata x minor
not a oreophilla
Hey Najo, It seems that you know quite a bit about this plant anyway. Botanical Name: Sarracenia alata x minor Experience Level: Easy. Height of Adult Plant: 18 inches. Flowering Maturity: 5 years. Type of Plant: Temperate perennial for outdoor growing. Sunlight: Full sun. Growing Season: April through November. Frost Tolerance: Zone 8. Mulch in colder regions. How long have you had your plant? And, how tall is it. The Flowering Maturity is 5 years - which may give an indication that you have some time to wait for the alata x minor.
Do you agree with suuporters the police are inventing the story about the knife?
The woman, who only gave her first name Ana, said she was out shopping on Sunday and, from her vantage point on the sidewalk across the street, saw Jamines get shot.
Contrary to accounts from six other witnesses, she said, Jamines was not holding a knife.
"The police said 'drop the weapon,' and the man looked at them like he'd been drinking," she said in Spanish. "But he was holding nothing, absolutely nothing."
Police Capt. Kris Pitcher, who is overseeing the shooting investigation, said Ana had been identified at the scene but detectives had not yet interviewed her.
Hernandez, who has been placed on administrative leave after the shooting, was involved in as many as three earlier shootings, Capt. Pitcher said.
The Los Angeles Times first reported that he shot a female robbery suspect in 1999 when the woman allegedly pointed a handgun at Hernandez and his partner and refused orders to drop the weapon. Her injury was not life-threatening.
In 2008, the Times reported, Hernandez shot an 18-year-old assault suspect who tried to flee, then pointed a gun at Hernandez and another officer. Hernandez shot the man once, wounding him.
Tomas Gomez, the brother-in-law of Jamines, said his relative came from a tiny hamlet in the rugged mountainous region of western Guatemala, the province of Solola, where he was married and had three young sons, the oldest of whom is eight.
Gomez said life was a struggle for Jamines and his family, whose native language is Quiche, one of about 20 Mayan dialects spoken in Guatemala. He only spoke a little Spanish and no English.
"They didn't have enough to eat," Gomez said.
Jamines decided to seek work in the U.S. a little more than five years ago. Another brother in law and Gomez came later.
Here he worked as a day laborer, mainly doing construction odd jobs, which he obtained at the local Home Depot. Jamines rented a room in an apartment near the Home Depot.
At times, he felt trapped and grew sad at being so far from his family, Gomez said. "He didn't have the money to go back, he wasn't getting a lot of work here," he said. "There were weeks when he wouldn't get any work."
Jamines liked to drink beer on the weekends, and was a drinker back in Guatemala, too.
Gomez said Jamines was not aggressive or violent. He had never seen him with a knife. He said he believes the police are inventing the story about the knife to justify killing Jamines.
"That's a falsehood by the police," he said.

People in the neighborhood had called the authorities because this man was walking around, threatening people with a knife. The last person he threatened, was a pregnant lady!! Also, in regards to him not understanding the language. The officers spoke to him in English and in Spanish. What should they have done? Waited until they dug up someone who spoke a Mayan dialect? We're in AMERICA people!!!! Furthermore, anyone would know to put down a weapon, when you see officers with guns, yelling at you. If he would have stabbed someone, then these MORONS would be bitching about how the police did nothing!!
